 2017 Preview

Spanish Fort completed the 2016 season with a 10-3 record. With their 7-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region one, the Toros earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Spanish Fort lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Opelika team by a score of 21-17.

The Toros hope to get back closer to the 15-0 record in 2015.

The defense was very stingy last season as Spanish Fort ranked 11th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 12.4 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Toros have gone 25-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Spanish Fort has gone a combined 88-12. Their 88.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 6A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 11 seasons, Spanish Fort has gone a combined 114-33. Their 78.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 6A and 7th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2007.

The Toros are led by head coach Ben Blackmon who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 25-3 over the past two seasons at Spanish Fort. Under his direction the Toros have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Blackmon. Coach Blackmon led Spanish Fort to a state championship in 2015.

Coach Blackmon's overall record as a head football coach in ten season stands at 77-37 (67.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach Blackmon's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won two region championships.

The Spanish Fort Toros will play in Class 6A region one during the 2017 season.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Spanish Fort has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Toros should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Toros have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2007 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

The defense returns Junior cornerback DJ James who registered 5 interceptions last year and Senior defensive back Tyler Miller who was in on 75 tackles last season.

The Toros open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent McGill-Toolen on Friday, August 25 at The Hill. Last year the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in first place in Class 7A region one. The Yellow Jackets lost in the Class 7A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Hoover. They final score was 17-7 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn.

Spanish Fort and McGill-Toolen have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Toros have a 4-6-0 record against the Yellow Jackets. They last met in 2016 with McGill-Toolen winning by a score of 24-3.

Spanish Fort returns 6A All-State Junior defensive back Desmond James. He was named to the second team last season.

College prospects include: Grant Betts (6-4, 262) defensive back, Jack Samsel (6-3, 210) quarterback,
